Old Mill Stream sits right on the Route 30 east corridor in Lancaster, which is both its biggest perk and the thing I warn people about. The perk: you’re minutes from Dutch Wonderland, Tanger Outlets, Bird-in-Hand, and Sight & Sound Theatres without ever getting on a highway with a trailer behind you. That matters more than people think — towing US-30 through the tourist stretch in July is a headache, and with delivery you skip it entirely.

The thing I tell folks: it’s a tourist campground, not a backwoods escape. You’ll hear the highway and you’ll have neighbors close by, especially on Sight & Sound weekends. If that’s the trip you want — easy access, walkable to a stream and a pool, kids riding bikes around the loop — it’s hard to beat. If you’re after quiet and woods, I’ll usually point you toward something like Country Acres or a state park site instead, and I’m happy to talk through the trade-off when you call.

How Delivery and Setup Actually Works

Here’s the part that surprises first-timers: you don’t meet me at a lot and learn to back a trailer. You book your own site directly with Old Mill Stream, tell me the site number, and I handle the rest. I bring the rig in before your check-in, get it level on the pad, connect to the campground’s water and electric, and run you through everything — the fridge, the water heater, the slide if it has one, the holding tanks. When you leave, I come back and haul it out. No dump station, no hitch, no stress.

One real-world note from doing this every week: the interior loops at Lancaster-area campgrounds can be tight, and back-in sites vary a lot in length. When to Book — and the Weekends That Fill First

  • Memorial Day and the 4th of July weekends — the busiest stretches I deliver all year. Sites at Old Mill Stream and the nearby parks book months out.
  • Sight & Sound and Dutch Wonderland season (spring through fall) — families pairing a show or a theme-park day with a couple nights of camping. This is my bread and butter near this campground.
  • Fall foliage weekends in October — Pennsylvania Dutch Country in autumn is gorgeous, the days are crisp, and the campground crowds thin out a bit from the summer peak.
  • Spring break weeks in April — cooler nights, so I make sure the furnace and propane are squared away before drop-off.
  • Hersheypark trips — folks base here and run up PA-283 to Hershey for the day, then come back to the site at night.

Weather-wise, plan for warm, humid summers — afternoon thunderstorms pop up fast in July and August, so the awning and AC both earn their keep. Spring and fall nights can dip cool, which is why I always check the heat before a shoulder-season delivery.

What’s Right Around the Campground

This is one of the most central campgrounds in the county for sightseeing. From your site you’re a quick drive to Dutch Wonderland, Sight & Sound Theatres, and the Strasburg Rail Road. Head into Bird-in-Hand and Kitchen Kettle Village for the Amish-country markets, or roll downtown to Lancaster Central Market — the oldest continuously operating farmers market in the country. Tanger Outlets is right off Route 30 if someone in the group wants to shop while the rest of you tour.

If you want a little nature mixed in, Lancaster County Central Park and Long’s Park are close, Chickies Rock County Park up by Columbia has a great overlook of the Susquehanna, and a day trip to Susquehannock State Park or Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area is easy. Gettysburg and Hersheypark are both reasonable drives if you’re staying the week.

Flying In or Coming From Out of Town

A lot of my Old Mill Stream renters fly in and skip the rental car altogether — that’s the beauty of delivery. Harrisburg International (MDT) is the closest big airport, with Philadelphia (PHL) and BWI both within driving range, and little Lancaster Airport (LNS) right in town.
